In 2009 Saul Zonana brought himself and his guitar to the Catskills home of drummer Aaron Comess (spin doctors, joan osborne etc…). Joining them were good friends Richard Hammond on bass and Teddy Kumpel on guitar. They set up their gear all around the house and for three days they ate pancakes for breakfast and spaghetti for dinner. They drank wine, told dirty jokes and played Saul’s new tunes a whole bunch. Saul was straight off the road from the Adrian Belew trio and had a more progressive edge to his new music. The boys were all over it. So much so that grammy winning engineer Roman Klun showed up with a mobile pro tools recording rig and the magic was now captured on multi track for all to hear. The album became BLUE MONKEY named after the blueberry pancake that was religion for Saul and the boys. This is some of the most musical and limit pushing material that Saul has released. Phatso (2010)
Zonana grew up listening to his older brother’s Beatles, Who, and Police records. These influences peek through like sun on a cloudy day via Zonana’s selective use of melodies, chords, harmonies and razor-sharp, Lennon-like vocals. It’s evident even at first listening (and more so after two, three or four goes) to his seventh solo release BLUE MONKEY that Saul Zonana’s got soul, baby. The man’s a clever musician and, dollars to doughnuts, a kick-ass live performer.
But lets stick with the studio albums for a moment. There are always new sounds to grab on to though the overall concept is always wrapped in the same Zonana package of unforgettable songs. This is not your run of the mill one good song and the rest filler situation here people. This is one of the few times that we’re not over using the word artist. In other words Zonana, to me, was born in the wrong generation of musicians. In a perfect world we’d be thinking of this guy right along the bands that he was raised with.
In 2004, the catchy song Holiday, from his 2003 WAVES CD, managed to get steady rotation on Clear Channel radio stations which launched Zonana into major regional success but nothing more. The film “Chasin It” which features Zonana aired on PBS and Lifetime channels. The video for his song “Bette” from the 2001 release GUINEA PIGS also was heavily viewed. His music also appears in several TV drama’s and feature films. The latest film being Matthew Broderick’s WONDERFUL WORLD. So Zonana is clearly a full time musician. He’s kept busy as a live performer touring with the likes of Adrian Belew, Crash Test Dummies, Lisa Loeb, Ace Frehely and countless others.
In the studio this guy is a sound smith. A musical autodidact, Zonana is often playing most if not all of the instruments on any given track. His self produced music has him always carving out something interesting and seems to keep adding instruments that he plays with a passion. Zonana never hesitates though to call on well known players such as Aaron Comess (Spin Doctors) and Adrian Belew (King Crimson) to name a few.
After listening to BLUE MONKEY about four times now I can honestly say that this artist started out well six albums ago and just keeps getting better. His next release entitled PHATSO (where and why does he come up with these titles) is apparently going to be available on April 18th based on information from his web site. I would be surprised if this next effort didn’t go even further down the road of awesome.
Lately Zonana has appeared in several instructional video’s for the new Moog guitar, which is a featured instrument on his latest album. He has an entire section of his web site that talks about the equipment he uses in the studio. He also has been spotted playing in a popular Beatles tribute show entitled “Mystery Trip”. Not surprising considering the Fab influence that is easily heard in his music. If you want to hear something memorable and original which is hard to come by in these times, keep your eyes and ears on Saul Zonana.
Blue Monkey (2008)
Yes- Another Saul Zonana CD. The most progressive one yet.
Saul is a NY native that has played/toured with Crash Test Dummies, Ace Frehely, Leon Russell, Kings X, John Hammond, Spin Doctors, Lisa Loeb etc… His music has been in several films/DVD\’s and TV shows.
Of late he has been touring with the great Adrian Belew.
He has had A major record deal /indie deals and 2 publishing deals in his now lengthy career as an artist.
This is his 6th and latest CD entitled Blue Monkey. He has been quoted saying that this was the most gratifying album to make. It\’s a more progressive collection and features really great musicians.
If you have other Saul Zonana recordings, you know what to expect by now and this one will not let you down. In fact it raises the bar.
Chapter 1 (2008)
Love Over Money (2006)
This is the 5th and probably the very best release by veteran singer song writer and multi-instrumentalist, Saul Zonana. This CD/DVD includes a short film featuring Saul, about today’s music business and includes many world class musicians. The CD features 10 new tunes and everyone of them is a pop gem (which is actually typical of Saul’s CD’s). “I consider this my most musical collection to date” says Saul. He’s right. The guitars really stand out on this one. Especially on numbers like “Like anyone Would” a song about an odd experience with a Bug that landed on Saul’s windshield while driving home. Although the disc features great musicians such as Gerry Leonard (David Bowie, Duncan Shiek) and Aaron Comess(Spin Doctors), Saul plays the bulk of the instruments himself on this collection. Another great one is “Broken Home” which tells the story of a once loving family that begins to fall apart. The melodies are unforgetable and the instrumentation rivals any of your favorite classic rock bands. “I really hear all of my classic rock influences raging out on these tunes” Saul laughs. I strongly suggest grabbing this one and getting into the sites on the DVD and the sounds on the CD. Indie Pop Mag gives this 5 out of 5 stars!
